With maps and a GPS, I don't see how you could get lost. Just don't blindly follow GPS directions, use it to see where you are.

Don't let it overwhelm you, it's quite a straight forward trip done by many, many people.
Most resources you will find by just looking around RTA, such as these books available in the RTA Books link in the tool bar above, and this detailed California Benchmark map. You will find local maps and tourist leaflets as you travel and with a GPS as a back up tool, it's hard to go wrong.

I just did a Google Map. I did lots of changes to my route, and now it looks like my only departure from oceanside (Santa Monica to Pacifica) driving will be forced around Oxnard, Lompoc, San Luis Opisbo, and Monterey.

Between that, my amended Google Map, and the GPS on my Smart Phone, we should be good!
