Is your Tiguan gas or diesel?
The Tiguan is Gas
I don't know what fuel additive they sold you for winter but it'll be gone by the time you get out here. Chances are it's alcohol and that's what 10% of gasoline is nowadays anyway....
Recently serviced vehicle, new tires, warm clothes and good judgement - should do fine.
Just keep your sensors active for weather issues ahead.
My preference for driving in the dark is to do it in the morning while I'm fresh. But that's my normal workday routine anyway. Up at 0430 and drive an hour and be at work at 0630.
I'm sure a Marine is familiar with that routine.... or is that considered sleeping in?
There's also a bit of mitigation in areas where there is snow on the ground - it can be fairly bright and is not as bad as driving in full dark.
I got back a note from Fairfield Inn about their being full but no cars - the really were full from sports teams using buses. Glad we didn't get in as it would have been noisy.
I have been glad to use my GPS for cross-checking the speedometer. The Jeep reads about 5 mph too fast at 75 and the extra 5 mph when using the GPS for speedometer adds up at the end of a 10 hr day on dry roads in clear weather.
Enjoy the high speed in Montana!
Gas engines do not need a fuel additive for cold weather. However, I would recommend a 0W40 Euro spec synthetic oil.
I agree and I would expect it's authorized in the Owner's Manual for a VW.
Might also be nice to scope out how to insert a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator to block airflow in the event of subzero travelling weather. My Jeep was fine with only 1/4 of area exposed - even at 80 and down to stoplights when in the + 20F range. But the Jeep is not easy to slip cardboard in place so I had to invent a more complex solution.
4 days out, checking weather daily. Looking good so far...COLD, but no major storms rolling that will affect the route.
We are heading out in the morning headed up to Indianapolis from Havelock NC. I know there are some storms up around that area but seems to be fine where we are headed. Any issues Im missing?
Prognosis charts suggest clear sailing for two days then a front will arrive there. Should be ok.
Bon Voyage!
Update: trip is going great clear skies, and smooth sailing so far. Will be in Waterloo, Iowa in 211 miles. We will rest there for the night and get back on the road tomorrow. I know we have some weather ahead of us in Rapid City but seems manageable so far. Will keep tracking weather. Thanks again for all the help fron the forum has served as a very resourceful tool.

Update: made it into Rapid City this evening. Trip is going great we will take the day off tomorrow to explore and rest up for the last 1150 miles. Looking for suggestions on our next leg. Rapid city to Bozeman MT. Need to decide between taking 90 or 212. Any suggestions?
I'd certainly use I-90. A lot of online map programs like US-212 because it's shorter, but it takes you through some pretty remote areas, and really doesn't save you any time. Add in the fact that it's winter, and US-212 would not be a fun place to be if a storm popped up, and I-90 would be the obvious choice for me.
Thanks MWM. After research that is what we decided and the article about the Wisconsin couple trapped in their car for 6 days helped sway the decision. 90 still has alot to see along the way as well.
Made it to Montana 681 miles left. We will split this up due to the passes. I have great video I will post once we are complete. This will those that will be on 90 anytime soon.
Assuming I'm thinking of the same incident, the experience of that Wisconsin couple would have been irrelevant to your trip.
The case I'm thinking of from a year or two ago involved a couple that left Yellowstone National Park and attempted to use Beartooth Pass, despite the fact that the highway was marked as closed for winter. Basically, it nearly was another case of "death by GPS," where the couple ignored both maps and road closed signs and blindly followed what the GPS said, right over impassible snow covered roads. (And not surprisingly, they blamed google for their mistake after they were rescued.)
The section of US-212 across western South Dakota and Eastern Montana that is often suggested as a shortcut to I-90 is very different terrain, and is open year round.
Checking the forecasts it looks like you'll be running in rain in the low altitudes which may turn to snow over the passes. Then E Washington may be clear or raining depending on whether you get very far on Monday.
Clear sailing!
made it to Spokane weather was fairly good. So far trip has been great and I can't believe how beautiful this part of the country is. AMAZED. We have one small leg left to Seattle and Snoqualmie Pass.
Thanks again everyone
Don't relax yet. I've found in my runs to/from Seattle that the most difficult driving is on the interstate in the Seattle area. Heavy traffic, special lanes, local customs......
It's not over until you're safely chocked, shutdown and tied down.
I hope the views are good thru Snoqualmie.
Forecast for Snoqualmie for tonight and tomorrow is snow.
Greetings. We made it to our destination yesterday at 1330. The trip was AMAZING, and I fell in love with the mid west. Given the time of year weather was very cooperative. Thanks again for all that assisted with my preparation. This forum is a very resourceful tool. I will be writing a report at a later date with videos. It may be helpful for those travelling in the future. Now I must prep for two interviews I have in our new home WA State! Safe travels
So glad it went well for you, and I for one am looking forward to the full report (and videos).
Good luck with your interviews!
Donna
Congratulations!
Looking forward to the trip report.
Great to hear. I too am looking forward to reading the report.... when you are ready.
And look how ,much you learned about planning and preparing for a road trip. You'll be set for life now!
