Marathon has 500 people living in it. I am not sure how easy it is to find something open. Of course depending on what time you get there, call from Fort Stockton, to be sure. There is a Wal-Mart there too for some last groceries. Food and gas are much more expensive in Big Bend!
We'll be heading from the direction of Del Rio, but i'll make notes of numbers and ring ahead. This is the last stop before BB so i reckon it'll be a good idea! Google Earth shows three places to stay, not bad :)
Well, we're back now (depressed and very gutted!).
Had a wonderful time but it all passed by too quickly.. I'll have some pictures up soon enough. San Antonio was very nice, as was the Alamo Village and onto place like Big Bend. Got plenty of ghost towns photographed, like Pumpville, Langtry, Texon, and some others.
Sad now.... wanna be back in Texas!

Hey Steve, pleased to hear you had a good time !
It's always a bit of a downer arriving home but when you start sorting your pics the memories come flooding back it'll soon put a smile back on your face.

It sure does Dave, a month was a real long time and if it wasn't for all pics and movies we made then much would be forgotten. I was going through some pictures from the first week and it was a case of "ohh I remember that!" lol
I'm uploading some images to my flickr page and i'll have to get something written for the travel blog too. But it's just finding the time, a baby and pregnant missus is killing me! ;-) But i WILL deff get some images /etc done for here.
But please do check out the Flickr page, i'm trying to add a couple each day or so. The hardest part is wading through everything, we've almost 3000 pictures!!
We will NEVER fly with BA again, terrible airline and rude staff. (long story). But it sure does look like this year was the last one in North America for us. Gotta spend some of this money on the kids and house now.. (sob).. I think we'll have an English road trip in a couple of years - northern England with Cumbria, Dales, Northumberland.. Hardly Texas, but hey! ;(

Great choice with seeing Texas! I'm from England originally myself, but have been living in Texas for 7 years now. I become a naturalized Citizen this week so I 'aint going back.
Big Bend really is a MUST see. This time of year the weather will be nice too. We went back in April of 2008. Got mighty cold at night when we were camping - but temperatures reached 100 degrees by midday!
Be prepared for LOTS of driving if you want to see much of Texas. Its big....REALLY big.
The hill country, West of San Antonio is a great place to visit too. Some great rivers for tubing on in the summer.
We live in Houston - make sure you give us a holler if you pass through now.

I have found this very old thread and thought someone may be interested in some extra information, if they ever ran across it.
There is (or at least there was in 2003) a place called Wildhorse Station @ State Highway 118, Terlingua, TX 79830
I never stayed here, but looked over the cabins and of course they weren't five star, but they were nice little places to stay out in the desert.
I have stayed at the Easter Egg Motel/Hotel duplexes up on the hill. They were clean and the bed was extremely comfortable. I highly recommend them.
I have had friends who stayed at some condos in Lajitas. Very nice.
Between Study Butte and Lajitas, there are a number of places to stay.
Make sure you visit Enchanted Rock, near Fredricksburg. A great hike to the top of the monolith!
