You could always check with an automobile electronics installer. Considdering that most police cruisers these days have a mobile laptop with wireless broadband, GPS, and digital mapping service, and they run those daily, you should be able to find a way to set it up so it will protect the integrety of your computer AND your car's electric system. In short, talk with a auto electronics dealer.
I've got several thousand if not ten thousand travel miles under my belt running a laptop on the road and can say - It might be enough to power your laptop. I have used 400 watt to power a laptop with no problem. 12inch and 17inch laptop models. Obviously it handles the 12 inch monitor better.
Going up to 800 watts on an inverter does no good unless you plan to run the wires right to the battery. ecause the car aux and lighter power source can barely supply 400 watts.
As soon as you try plugging something else into the inverter it will be strained and you will hear the low voltage alarm alot. I blew two 20amp fuses trying to run the laptop and phone charger in a Chevy SUV.
