Back in '92, a friend and I drove from Bay Area to Lincoln, Nebraska in 25hrs. We took turn driving and didn't stop long except for gas and a few bathroom breaks. We didn't even stop frequently for food since we packed a few stuffs.
We then drove back in the same fashion but a slower since we ran into a blizzard in Wyomin and had to stop a few hrs waiting for it to pass. And we stopped at Reno too.
If you have 2 people taking turn driving, then it could be done. A single driver will be really tough.
O yeah, single driver is next to impossible. We plan on packing light snacks and water and taking turns. The only breaks will be for gas and stretching. We are really hoping for an amazing time but will be happy with anything under 48 hours.
On a side note, one of my friends hitched a ride with a guy he knew who was moving to Alaska. My friend went up there to fish for a season. They took a crappy old uhaul from pittsburgh to alaska. Took them about a week. That is an insane trip.
I would love to do that this summer, if I had the cash. I'm envious.
I had a friend that made it from Chicago to California is about 40 hours. Solo. And I talked to another guy that make the trip from West Virginia? or somewhere on the east coast to CA in about 52 hours solo also. So I think your trip is entirely possible with multiple drivers, as long as you average about 60 miles an hour. Also, you might want to consider traffic in some of the major cities along the way. That could really screw up your plans. If you hit LA during rush hour, figure an average speed of less than 15 mph for hours. Maybe try and drive through the major metropolitan areas during the weekday nights if you can, and the open stretches during the day or weekends.
One of these days I'll be driving up to alaska. That will be my ultimate roadtrip.
Yeah Alaska would be the ultimate trip. I would really like to do that one. We plan on leaving NYC around 8 or 9pm on a thursday. This will give us plenty of time to get off the east coast and through what I believe are the highest traffic areas (until Cali) overnight. Plus we have already seen alot of the east so rather do that part at night when we wont see anything anyways.
Hi,
If your June trip works out well you might want to enter the real thing:
The Great American Run (think Cannonball Run 2007). I've attached a
link to the entry form. Good luck!

I wonder to what extend going VERY fast would decrease your trip time, in general, since you use fuel so much more quickly and thus have to stop after covering less distance? I heard recently that the Bugattti Veyron going flat out uses its whole tank in 11 minutes (which admittedly takes it a pretty long way at that speed!)
One thing that COULD help though, the size of gas tanks can vary hugely, that could make a real difference to how often you have to stop. The range shown by the trip computer in some cars when you've JUST filled up is shocking!
Anyhow, have fun but don't endanger yourself or others with either speed or tiredness eh?
How fast does this baby go? Yikes!Quote:

I just don't see much difference.
(NOT encouraging you to all go out and speed just to test my theory. LOL)
you have GOT to tell us how it all worked out. You leave tomorrow!!! Good luck- and BE safe. Sounds like a blast.
