Just an FYI, the Timberline Lodge where they filmed the exterior shots for The Shining is located on Mt. Hood in Oregon. I just don't want someone trying to find it near Seattle. :-)

Yes, that road is gorgeous and we would certainly welcome any posting about your son's recent road trip adventure!

The exterior of this beautiful lodge was used for the exterior shots of the "Overlook Hotel" in "The Shining." Most of the movie was shot in studios in England. As I understand it, the lodge is located on Highway 26 about 60 miles east of Portland. A photo of it is online here.
Judy: Have you been there?
Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood is an amazing lodge with beautiful architecture. Although much smaller on the inside than the hotel interior shots used in the film, it has a wonderful, cozy atmosphere. It was a WPA project in the 1930's and has been very well maintained. You walk right out the door and can hit the trails up Mt. Hood. Great hiking and views.
Timberline Lodge is to Mt. Hood what Paradise Lodge is to Mt. Rainier. The major difference is that since Mt. Hood is a much smaller mountain, the trails from the Lodge get you up onto the mountain proper much quicker and is an easier climb for climbers. However, Mt. Hood still has its dangers and people do get caught in bad weather there so, when hiking/climbing any mountain, you do need to be prepared and know the risks.
Skiing is also close by but I have only been there in the summer so I can't speak to that.
The reason that the interior shots of the hotel in the film looked different is that they were created in a sound stage in England. I don't think any of the scenes from the inside of Timberline Lodge made it into the film.
It is an IMPRESSIVE location -- I wonder if avalanches have ever been a problem there?
What a spot for a base for day hikes!
whatever you do, do not miss jackson hole/ yellowstone. it will change your life !
Wow, I'm going to be making this trip the other direction starting the 1st of June. I'll be making it with my girlfriend, as we're going out east to live for the summer. Any suggestions for a college kid making his first long road trip? How about for a westerner living out east for the first time?
Aaron, I would suggest reviewing many of the threads posted on this forum for ideas. Then go to the "road trip planning" tab and read some of the articles.
Since I've never lived in the East, I can't comment on that part of your question.
If you have specific questions, you might want to start a new thread. I'm sure you'll get lots of responses.
