hey, its ben again. i didnt say anything about san fran; stayed there many times. i used to try and find a motel away from union square but finally decided that it was worth it to spend the extra money to be where the action is
hotels are hurting out there so prices are cheap ( esp in jan/feb ) . they'll ramp up by may as conventions hit town.
anyway, i got a rate of $ 130 a night at the st francis which is the absolute best location to be. guess what the garage fee per day was ? $ 40 !!! once u get to downtown u dont need a car but without one u can't explore, esp across the golden gate bridge into marin county ( neat stuff )
check the holiday inn on union sqaure to. nice hotel, reasonably priced, newish but no charm like the st francis
absolutely u go to the buena vista cafe at the wharf and have an irish coffe for breakfast !

Jumping back and forth
Jumping back and forth is a bit tricky as there are very few roads that would enable such activity. Route 1 can be slow, but it is one of the most magnificent coastal highways in the world -- lots of hidden coves and places to go exploring. It is not a fast track road -- but still worth driving the entire route if you have enough time.
