There are many more scenic places to stop and marvel. But if making tracks is important, I would say that using 101 will add an easy seven hours to the trip.
PCH is a great drive. Winding and one lane for each direction though.
I Don't remember the name of the restaurant, but some of the best seafood I have ever had came from a restaurant on that highway somewhere outside of San Luis Obisbo on Big Sur. The restaurant is right on the cliffs and has an awesome view from its outdoor deck. They have the clam-chunkiest N.E. Clam Chowder I have ever seen, and serve it up in gracious portions inside of freshly-baked Sourdough bread bowls (I had two).
San Luis Obisbo was a cool town on that leg of my California trip also.
Sorry I have no great memories of San Diego to share, My enjoyment of such was greatly impeded by a bad inner ear problem.
(If you ever drop some change in a hot tub, leave it there)
