I must say that your experience in Peru tops mine in terms of sheer danger! The picture of your truck straddling the Equator also reminded me of two places I have always wanted to get to but never will. Both are in oceans: the intersection of the Prime Meridian and the Equator (Atlantic) and the intersection of the Equator and the International Dateline (Pacific) where one can be in all four hemispheres at the same time.

I had never thought of this kind of "four corners" experience. Yeah, I doubt I will ever have the means or the reason to tarry at the intersection of those four "lines."
And with respect to Rick's experiences -- from the stories I have heard -- the Peru trip, described above, wouldn't even be in the top 10 of his most dangerous scrapes with certain folks. In some ways, Rick was a real life "Indiana Jones" in his misspent youth.

My husband has crossed the Equator at least 2 or 3 times (courtesy of the US Navy), as well as the International Dateline (also USN). It's possible to be in two hemispheres and two days at the same time, but it isn't a common occurrence with the USN. Navy guys have a special thing when they cross the Equator for the first time.

This is a photo I shot of Zzyzx Springs on February 11, 2006. I chartered a plane to get some aerial shots. I still don't know what happened to the photos I did in 1994, but you can spot the reflecting pool in this long-distance shot. It also shows some of the dry lake bed.
