Anxiety or excitement ?
Does your dog cry with anxiety or excitement ? Our German shepherd got so excited when she got in the car because she knew that usually meant she was going for a good run somewhere and would whine non stop, until we stopped. After 2 trips of her whining for 2 or 3 hours until she had been let out, we discovered that if we packed all our stuff, put her in the car and drove round the corner to the local park and let her run for 15 minutes, she was then quiet and settled for hours on end. Funny thing is, it only worked if we put her in the car and drove her to the park and not if we walked her there first.

In looking at our local pet store, there are all sorts of things to contain a dog while driving in a car these days. Like SWDave above, we had a dog once that absolutely did not want to get left behind. As soon as she sensed a lot more activity (we were packing the travel trailer in the driveway), she would be so excited that she'd get underfoot. My dad finally came upon the solution of putting her in the car when we were packing -- even if we did not leave that day. You could leave all 4 doors of the car wide open, and she'd stay in the car. When we were done packing for the day, she'd happily come back in the house for the night. She just did not want to be left behind!
As for having two drivers, it's really a fallacy that you can drive further just because you have a 2nd driver. That's because the 2nd driver gets fatigued just sitting in the car. This will be especially true if that adult has to sit cramped in the backseat with the toddler and the dog.
