Planning 1st trip- 3 weeks from Atl to SW, W, and back!

I would highly recommend that you NOT carry any gas in your trunk.

If you fill in Fallon, you will make it to Ely no problem - fill in Ely and you will make it to Richfield no problem. I've made that exact run going west and that's what I did - and I drive a full size pickup. I know for a fact that what gas there is between Fallon and Ely costs about 50 cents a gallon more. I don't remember any gas between the NV/UT state line and Delta.

On I-70 there's no gas or cell service between Salina and Green River. I think there's one pullout with portapotties, other than that there is absolutely no civilization along that stretch.

You will make good time on US-50. Speed limit in NV is mostly 70 and mostly 65 in UT. Ely would make an excellent lunch stop.

Actually, that is exactly what you get when you let the computer do all the "work." It's a big reason why the regular members of this forum are huge fans of paper maps, and frequently warn against the overreliance on electronic tools for a roadtrip. The same is true when it comes to using GPS when you are actually on the road.

I completely agree with GLC, bringing a can full of gas with you is a very bad idea. At best, everything you bring with you is going to end up smelling like gas, at worst, it could be very dangerous in an accident. There is no reason you should have any problems covering these distances with plenty of fuel in your Camry.

If you're using US-50 to I-70 now, I'd highly recommend considering a detour to Arches/Canyonlands.

I have paper maps, a road atlas, GPS in my phone with Google Maps, but you know what I use when I'm on the forum here making recommendations and answering questions? Microsoft Streets & Trips. I can manipulate it better than paper maps, I can zoom in and out with the mouse wheel. I do NOT like Google Maps or Mapquest for doing any kind of planning, they are just too restrictive. However, I won't leave home without the atlas!
