You won't have ANY tolls if you take I-68 at Hancock to I-79 at Morgantown back to I-70. You will avoid lake effect if you stay on I-70 to Indy then take I-74 to get to I-80. This is more efficient than staying on I-70 any farther, Indy is where I-70 starts heading southwest and you won't have to deal with STL and KC, which can be congested.
The I-68 route only adds 10 miles and I like driving it a LOT better than the PA Turnpike. There are a LOT less trucks.
If you have Marriott points, the best value would be to stay at Fairfield, they are generally pretty decent. There's also Courtyard and Springhill. Residence Inn is for extended stays.

I've been trying to log in to the site all day but for some reason could not until just now.
Well, the driving plans are on hold for right now, although things could change at any minute. I have been offered the use of a car out in Utah and my husband thinks he might be able to come out after a month so I could return to work back east. I am looking into flying instead of driving. I have a definite feeling that my husband and I will be making this drive for sure at some point before May.
I can't thank you all enough for the very helpful tips and route suggestions, and for sending them so quickly. I am a frequent driver from DC to Cape Cod and the Green Mountains of Vermont so if I can return the favor, please send a message and I'll be right on it.
Best regards.
