As a frequent visitor to Death Valley, will be there in a couple of weeks, I would argue that a drive through in the summer may not be the best use of travel time. My first visit, 35 years ago, was in October in a convertible. It was miserable!
I have not seen anyone suggest Lake Tahoe. It could be included to or from San Francisco or Yosemite. I think Tahoe is spectacular and the weather in the summer is perfect. Lots to do with a family.
