Oh, Zerby, I'm so sorry for your loss! -- been there, done that. AAMOF, my late father-and-mother-in-law's house has been up for sale, and recently sold. It's so difficult to deal with, so you have my ultimate sympathy! My husband came home with a U-Haul truck about 20 months ago.
Most motels have plenty of room for U-Haul parking, my husband found out. He did find that truck stops were much better for fueling up, though, because he didn't have to worry about swing room and overhead obstacles! Check out this thread for more information on traveling with a U-Haul. It's my husband's trip from MO to CA, bringing a U-Haul full of stuff back from his parents' home.

Thanks for your help Donna. I don't know what size U-Haul he'll rent. I've always dreamed of being in a truck for a road trip. A big Truck I mean.

My husband used to drive commercial trucks -- the big rigs. He says it's not all it's cracked up to be, but if he had it to do again, he wouldn't unless he could bring me along as co-driver, he was in his own rig, and could be an independent driver. You're on the road, yes, but you can't stop and see anything, or you don't make $$. Passing by Mt Rushmore? Can't go in. Passing by Gettysburg? Can't go in. (The only reason he got to go in was that his tractor had a major breakdown in the area. He rented a car while it was being fixed, and he and his co-driver went to Gettysburg!)
It doesn't matter, he no longer meets the health qualifications of a big rig driver.
As for what size truck you'll rent, it will probably depend a lot on how much you're bringing back. I think my husband wanted a 14-ft for his trip, but they didn't have one so they gave him a 17-ft at the same price.
