Thanks everyone for you suggestions and ideas.
Lifey, we read about the International licence on some of the American tourist websites, and a few guys from my husbands work who have travelled in the US recommended them also. After reading your post, we probably wont worry now, as it seems our Aussie licence should be fine....thanks. On my bucket list is Montana, so we will probably stick to the northern route of our Seattle to Yellowstone leg. I would love to see Idaho, but there is just so much to see and time is against us. Hopefully we may go again to see everything we don't this time around?
CAnative, I don't think time will permit us to travel north between Seattle and Yellowstone, but if we do get a chance, we will definately check those parks out. We do plan on getting an Interagency Annual Park pass that will get us in to all the parks. As we are interested in seeing the countryside, this pass will get a good workout!!
Does anyone know of a motel to stay in Morristown NJ? We will be there for two days, and are catching up with Perth friends who are visiting their son in Morristown. They will take us into New York, and show us newbies the sights? Most places I have found tend to be quite pricey > $200/night? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I used the site motel-finder and found some that were about 2-3 miles away from Morristown, at less than $75/night. But I just picked random dates, not knowing exactly when you'll be in Morristown. If you are anywhere around Thanksgiving (4th Thursday in November), expect to pay more at a motel.

Thanks Donna.
I found the site and have found a place with good revues in Rockaway for $100/ night. Will be booking there. We are in New Jersey 27-30th October, so we will get a couple of trips into NY. I want to see The World Trade Centre memorial, Central Park, Times Square and ride the Staten Island ferry.

Facilities in West Yellowstone will all still be open in October. Not only is it a gateway to the park, it hosts winter activities such as skiing in the winter. I can highly recommend the Evergreen Motel for your base of operations. It will have "off season" rates that start at $60 a night.

Not sure if you've booked KY yet, but I'll second the suggestion of Georgetown. It's more small-town (there's a small private college there) than Lou or Lex, and it's smack in the middle of horse-farm country. It's also close to several bourbon distilleries, if that interests you. Frankfort (state capital) and Versailles are also small-town, and are between Lou and Lex.
Also, Louisville and Lexington are only about a 45 minute drive from each other on the interstate, so it's not far if you want to see places near/in both cities.
Not sure if these are on your itinerary, but Mammoth Cave and Hodgenville (Lincoln's birthplace) are closer to Louisville than Lexington (might be best to hit those on your way in or out of the state). I also highly recommend Bardstown - it's a great little historical town and is the location of Federal Hill (My Old Kentucky Home). (It's also conveniently near bourbon distilleries...)

Thanks glc. I was worried we wouldn't have access through the West entrance but after reading all the posts, I know we'll be fine. We are booked in at Three Bear Lodge in the motel part, for $89/night. It was a choice with Evergreen though.
Thanks morgail. Our Kentucky, trip has changed slightly now and we are going to do part of the Bourbon trail. We are booked in at Elizabethtown, so we will see Makers Mark in Loretto and Jim Beam in Clermont. I have looked at Bardstown and we will pass through there. I have planned to travel only 3 - 4 hours every day, so there will be time to stop, and see everything we want to. My husband is an avid photographer, so I'm sure we'll be pulling over a lot!!

As pointed out better to fly in to NYC and drive out west because the weather starts getting cold here and camp grounds start to close.
