We talked it over, and we might take your advice, in regards to reversing the direction of our trip. Would it make more sence, to move the southern part of the trip up a bit? So that we could pass Salten lake, Joshua Park, Phoenix and so on?

We are really looking forward to the van, we will make sure to post our experience after the trip. But so far we feel like we are in good hands.

What you could do is go from San Diego to the Salton Sea, then through Joshua Tree, get back on I-10, take that to US-60/AZ-71/AZ-89 to Prescott, then Alt-89 to Sedona and on up to Flagstaff. I'd honestly take a pass on Yuma and Phoenix.
