CA 1 for the coastal highway.

Yes, the 101 is an inland route. CA1 is the coastal highway, but the very scenic section is between the Cambria and Monterey stretch and is slow going with Lot's of views etc to take in. By taking 101 after Monterey it will give you a little more time to do so, although you could continue to Santa Cruz on CA1 and thento CA17/85. If you are making good time then by all means you could continue on CA 1 all the way through Half Moon bay etc.
