I suppose the places I most want to get to on this visit are Vegas, the Grand Canyon and Death Valley. Since I was going to be heading back to San Fran for my return flight I thought I might as well take in the scenic coast road and Big Sur. However, this might have to face the chop on this visit.
It's possible if you take the 6 days, [ depart 2nd up to and including the 7th] but you have to decide at what pace you want to travel at, it's not every day you can see one of the 'Wonders of the world'. We have already established that getting as far on day one as possible is the way you want to go. So day 1] to Kingman [or close by]. Day 2] continue to GC look around and hopefully witness a sunset. Stay in the park if the budget permits, Tusayan or Williams, being the cheaper of the options. Flagstaff is another option with cheaper lodgings and would be a good bet if you left by the East kiosk. This will give you the opportunity to drive along 'Desert view drive' and take in the viewpoints. Of course you can drive this in either direction between the two entry kiosks. Day 3] To Vegas for the night. Day 4] Vegas/ Death valley. [Stovepipe Wells or Pananmint Springs would be good options in the park, Lake Isabella area would be possible as well.] Day 5] To Cambria/San Simeon. Day 6] Back to SF around Big Sur. Without that day 6 you would have to drive through Death valley and make your way towards the coast, perhaps near Paso Robles [no idea of lodging etc] and then back to San Fran. That would start getting a little rushed though and it might be wise to pick between Death valley and the coast.
