Abilene-Roswell-Tucson leg
Well, if it was me, I think I would do either of these options:
Map 1: Clovis & Fort Sumter, NM, is the land of Billy the Kid. Fun stuff. Roswell is also a hoot but you really only need about 4 hours or so to see most of the alien stuff. White Sands is an interesting stop. Tombstone for some OK Corral fun.
Map 2: The only real difference here is that you're trading the Billy the Kid sights for a visit to the amazing Carlsbad Caverns. A pretty cool place. If you go, you might want to time your visit for later in the day so you can also see the bats leave the cavern at dusk. Millions of 'em. It's pretty cool. But don't get there too late in the day or some of the tours might not be available.
