Do you think I need to book up accomodation on that leg of the trip,from Johsua Tree to Vegas, or do you think we will be able to just turn up. I would prefer to be more flexible on that leg of the trip and not be restricted by hotel bookings. Do you think 4th to 19th April will be busy?

The trip is finally booked - we have changed things a bit to leave out Bryce as an overnight stop and instead spending 3 days at Zion, hopefully in a nice hotel! It seems there are lots of good places to day trip to from Zion, including Bryce.
My only remaining question is about the CAR. I am not familiar with American cars- other than knowing they are big!
We would like something comfortable and large, preferably an SUV type vehicle with a high riding position, and room for lots of bags. There will be 2 kids in the back. Does anyone have a recommendation for a car in this category, or can even tell me what category this comes into - should we book standard or premium for example. Car hire sites are never specific about what you get.

What I think you should be looking for is an Intermediate SUV or Mini Van. Both of these would meet your needs without getting into the outrageous rates that would come with a Full Sized or Premium SUV. Car hire web sites won't be terribly specific about which actual make and model you will get, because they literally don't know which cars in their fleets will be there the day you arrive. Use a search site such as Travelocity or Orbitz to see what all the companies at a given location have to offer. Remember that Intermediate is the same as Mid-Sized etc.; they're just marketing terms. What you really want to look at is where each company will say "Ford Escape or similar" and then look up more details on the various models to get a feel for what you'll be getting.
