The route that AZBuck has laid out will work fine in January -- you do need to check local weather and road conditions, but I wouldn't be concerned about the route. It would be "nicer" in June than January, but I have driven most of those roads in January -- you will see snow -- but it shouldn't be that much a problem. Here are some winter driving tips.
