We're taking the long way, around the bottom. 15 to 58 to 98, with another slight change: instead of Fresno, we'll be stopping in Visalia, slighty south of Fresno. From there, we will drive straight west via 198 to 41 to 46, into Cambria, instead of staying in Big Sur. Easier to just drive through it the following day on our way north. Less retracing of steps! And Cambria seems a easier town to lodge in.

We won't be frequenting it, if we have to drive out in the morning to Sacramento and back in the evening, thats no problem for us.

If anyone wants to question your sanity, you can have them look at my insane roadtrip, where I did all of the lower 48 states (12,500 miles) in under 28 days. And that was the first time I went on a roadtrip. Ever.

The nice thing about yours is that you're spending a few days in certain areas, unlike us where we had to keep moving every 12-18 hours.

I'm currently on a 4500-mile roadtrip right now, which will be only 2 weeks, but we're spending a full day (2 nights) in a lot of places, which gives us relaxing mornings and more time to see sights.

We were just at the Grand Canyon 36 hours ago. No doubt you will enjoy it as well when you get here. I assume you'll be doing the South Rim.

Hotel reservations are nice, but roadtrips, especially of ones that take a month or longer, are very tentative. You may expect to be at one destination on a certain day, but weather, car issues, traffic, etc. can alter your schedule. And that reservation you had may be forfeited. Granted, some places let you give a 24-hour notice so they won't charge you, but in my opinion, being spontaneous with your lodging is so much more fun. And you're going at a time of year when things aren't too crazy. (We hit a lot of "No Vacancies" in the summer.)

Quite the crazy trip you had! Amazing that the route managed to hit all the states. Even if it was just a corner ;)

I think on the whole, most of our trip will be spontaneus for the hotels, minus a few spots. Grand Canyon and Vegas specifically, due to shows we'll be seeing there. Elsewhere we can be more flexible. And probably will be!
