Eastern US Highways?

Starting: Albany, New York
Ending: Miami Florida? Not sure, all we know is somewhere south.

Were looking for a scenic route with different "cool" roadside stops along the way. We want to stop at different "weird" roadside places.

Were not really sure about highway, just something that doesn't "wind" to much just so we can save some gas.

Otherwise were looking for adventure, something away from the normal route like I95.

Our trip is either going to be down Route 11 or I-95...

Here's a link to some info on route 11 with alternate routes and cities along the way. If you want to look into other north to south routes, check out this website.

Unfortunately, US-11 does not have an organization devoted to its promotion as do old US-66, US-30 and others. But just a quick survey of an atlas yielded these sights along it or within 25 miles or so:

Gettysburg
Harper's Ferry
Luray Caverns
Blue Ridge Parkway
Great Smoky Mountains

From the Great Smoky Mountains, you should probably consider leaving US-11 to head more toward the coast via US-23 and US-441 with stops at:

Okefenokee Swamp
Kennedy Space Center

The joy of travelling these highways is the unexpected, small, mom-and-pop attractions that are sprinkled along the way. Keep your eyes open and watch for the signs.

Your best bet would be to get an atlas of the entire US. This would not only let you follow the roads that you expect to travel, but also find the side roads that will be a big part of the adventure. You can find our reviews and recommendations here. These are generally available for less than $10 at book, map and discount (Costco, Sam's Club, and the like) stores. You can also, if you have a couple of months before you leave, request the official state highway maps from each of the states you'll be travelling through. You can usually find an order form on the state's official tourism or highway department web pages. I highly recommend these maps as the most detailed available, with lots of state parks, scenic roads and other attractions marked. Besides, they're free! (Usually) The downside is that they can take quite a while to be delivered.
