Yes, I have considered credit cards specific to a gas company. There are good deals out there for such cards. The main problem with that is you aren't allowed to "shop around" for the best prices on fuel. Also, you may take an exit for a fuel stop and the station you need is not even available at that exit. It's not something that I'll rule out, but my "dream card" would offer the same rebate for all gas stations.

I found that the reward point program is available with some of the cards I researched, the Cit Driver's Edge card is such a card, and many of the other Citi cards use the reward point program. Can I ask you how you like that type of program? Is it convenient redeeming points, or is it a huge hassle?

I have a discover card and they have "get more" items that you get 5% on each quarter. The quarter you get 5% back on gas (anywhere) and other automotive repairs at select shops. This ends june 31st.

The also did this last year when I did my cross country road trip. Definately tried to melt that card.

Personally I think the reward point programs are a waste of time for me. I probably spend less than AUD10,000 per year on my card, so my rewards would be quite futile.

If you are spending a large amount of money on your card per annum, I suppose the rewards could be quite worth it.

Now through June 30th Discovercard is giving a true 5% back on automobile related purchases, including gas on up to $1000 that you spend...in other words thats up to $50 cash back. there are no break points for percentages either, its a true 5% cash back. In fact every quarter they run some type of special...last quarter it was 5% back on up to $1,500 worth of medical expenses (up to $75 back). check it out.

Thanks for the heads-up. I already have a Discover card, but I had no idea about the gas rebates until June 30. That will come in handy. Still searching for my perfect card though. I'll be on the road most of (if not all of) July also.

Just be advised though, that in order to get the discount you have to sign up for it online at the discovercard website otherwise you wont see the cash back.

I finally decided on Citi's Diamond Preferred Rewards Card. The main reason I chose this card was it offers 10,000 points with the first purchase. The 10,000 points translates into $100 in gift cards. There are gas cards available, so that was like getting close to 3 tanks of gas just for buying one tank of gas. In addition, for gas purchases, grocery store purchases, and pharmacy purchases an additional 5 points per dollar spent is earned. I haven't found anything that comes close to this deal.
