Gen, that's a good guess -- the road dates from the same period, but this is a few miles to the west!

I did get it but much too late. :P

@Mark: It's located in a National Park in Eastern Canada.

One more : It's located in a National Park in the Province of Quebec. That park is great for rafting and kayaking.

It was just by the side of the road. There is a yellow board there, explaining its whys and wherefores.
