Don't Forget the Pickett!!!
As in the original, unadulturated, late-great Wilson Pickett, THE Wicked Pickett. "Mustang Sally"and "In the Midnight Hour" rate a play anywhere, anyhow. Get a greatest hits album and check out some of the other songs. For more great soul, give a listen to Otis Redding.
Two other favorites are "Nowhere Road" by Willie and Wayon and "Guitar Town" and "Copperhead Road" by Steve Earle. My own theme song is "Two Lane Highway" by Pure Prairie League.
As great as an ipod is, don't forget to check out the radio, and these days, especially the AM stations, which are often much less-structured than FM. The stations to the far left or right generally offer regional or special types of music. You just never know what you're going to hear.
I especially enjoyed a trip through southern Ohio when I found a station that played nothing but bluegrass. Driving through those hills and along the Ohio River just seemed to be the right combination.

Don't Forget Johnny and Willie
I just picked up the best of albums by Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson for my upcoming road trips. I also like the anything by the Red Hot Chili Peppers for staying awake and for staying entertained nothing beats a good broadway musical such as Phantom or Les Miz. (yeah - I know my taste in music is odd -perhaps I shouldn't mention that I'm a classically trained cellist and also listen to cello concertos, operas, etc when driving).
