My husband and I are planning 2 weeks in the USA (from the UK). We are starting in Nashville but want to see a concert in Davenport, Iowa. What is the best route, how long would the drive take. We are used to driving long distances having lived in Africa for 30 years so driving is not a problem. But would flying be better?

Basically, if you stick to interstates (I-24, I-57, I-74), the drive can be made in ~9 hours. If you want to do a little sight seeing on your way, stop by Land Between the Lakes in KY and explore St. Louis, MO -- most importantly don't forget to visit the Gateway Arch and its underground museum and the Soulard historic quarter. Before you leave Nashville, be sure to pay a tribute to American Country musicians and singers at the Country Music Hall of Fame!:-) Depending on when you plan to visit, if it is anytime near the month of May and the weather is clement, Davenport's Vander Veer Botanical Park is a great stop for a picnic. So is any waterfront park within the Quad Cities.Quote:

I believe you answered your own question!:-) If you appreciate to drive long distance and manage to have two whole weeks off, I don't see why you should fly. You have plenty of time to get from one point to another and enjoy the scenery on the way. Just my opinion:o)Quote:

The problem with flying to small cities like Davenport, other than the cost, is that there are very few direct flight options, so you'll almost certainly have a layover in Memphis, St. Louis, or Chicago (If not someplace even further away like Detroit, Minneapolis, or Dallas - I once flew from the Davenport/Moline Airport to Los Angeles, with a layover in Atlanta!). Once you take your flying time, plus your layover time, plus an hour to get through airport security, plus more time to get your bags and rental car, it will probably take you just as much time as driving.
I'd agree with Gen, drive, and if you've got the time, follow the great river road from Davenport to St. Louis, it will be far more enjoyable than looking at any airport concourse.
