California to Nebraska
My friend and I are planning a road trip from San Diego to Lincoln, (a) to see her granddaughter who has recently moved there, and (b) to see as much of the USA as we can en route, and have a great time. Any and all suggestions would be welcome. We are at the very early planning stages, so are not sure what time of year would be best, which route would be the most scenic, which the easiest, etc. We hope to spend at least a couple of weeks on the trip. We are neither of us spring chickens, but very young at heart and fit and healthy. Many thanks for your ideas and tips.

I would go either late May-early June or in September/October. The summer is HOT.
Not sure where in California you will be starting and ending. If you are starting going in the spring I'd go southern route first and northern route home and visa versa if you do it in the fall.
Places I'd hit: Las Vegas, NV. In Utah I'd hit Zion National Park, Bryce National Park, Scenic hwy 12 to Torrey, Utah, Capitol Reef National Park, stop in Moab, Utah to see Arches and Canyonlands National Park, take Hwy 128 east out of Moab to I-70. I-70 through Colorado is a beautiful drive...where as I-80 IMHO is so BORING!
On the way home I'd swing up to South Dakota to see Mt. Rushmore, Custer State Park, Deadwood City. Then into Wyoming to see Devils Tower National Monument, Yellowstone and Grand Tetons.
Of course these routes will take a lot longer than 2 weeks so you can pare it down.

Thanks
Thanks for the tips, Utahtea - we are thinking of going in June, so that sounds about right, and your suggestions are great.
