New York to-- somewhere romantic?

My boyfriend and I want to take a nine-day road trip from new york to somewhere exciting/fun/romantic (and back) in the last week of april. he suggested the florida keys. we're definitely looking for some sun sand and surf but I am myself partial to oddball places, crazy people, some once-in-a-lifetime adventures that'll leave us with incredible stories to tell. (e.g., new orleans, what a funky place.) So hoping any of you have suggestions for awesome destinations and must-stops along the way... looking forward to hearing all of them.

I think the Outer Banks NC are a pretty romantic place, Cape Hatteras Light, Blackbeard the Pirate, ferries on Pamlico Sound...

Stay at the Ocracoke Harbor Inn, and walk on the beach with your honey! See where the Brothers Wright first "slipped the surly bonds of earth, and danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings!" (John Gillespie McGee, Jr.)

But if you can get to the Bahamas, go there instead! I would. As it is, I may have to "settle" for a Tecate and Puerto Penasco!
