NC (I-40) to Pendleton OR

I hope to be leaving for a relocation move from the foothills of NC (near I-40) to the NorthEast corner of Oregon. I should be traveling the day after Christmas. I had originially planned a southern route (I-40 all the way across and then north.) Any input would be appreciated. I also plan on dumping most of my belongings and only carrying what fits in my vehicle. Been thinking of making a trade from a front wheel drive Buick to a new Honda Element for more room. In other words, no towing but a full load.

Although I-40 is a fine road, you might consider seeing the Colorado Rockies in Winter along the way. I would go I-24 to I-70 to I-15 to I-84. Are you going to Pendleton by any chance?
