Best RV road for drive to Big Bear Lake in CA
I rented a 30ft motorhome to drive up to Big Bear Lake just east of LA. I'm coming up from San Diego. I'm thinking of taking hiway 330 out of Highland which connects with the 18 into Big Bear. Since I've never driven an RV before, is this road ok for such a large RV or should I take another route? Looks like alot of switchbacks on the map. Thanks.
All three roads are RV-OK
Route 330 is a bit curvy, but certainly OK for RVs, however, if you have even the slightest bit of concern about driving a large scale vehicle on curvy mountain roads, I would suggest you stay on I-15 or I-215, bypass the San Bernardino routes and proceed to CA-138 and follow CA-138 to to Crestline (the views from the Rim of the World scenic byway are great) and then pick up CA-18 at Running Springs and then on to Big Bear.
Actually the least curvy road into Big Bear is the back road from Lucerne Valley (also CA-18) but that would be a large detour.
Route 38 is fine too, although Onyx Summit at 8440 feet is a bit tough on the average rental RV.
The most direct is the route 330 you previously mentioned -- if you take it slow and careful. You will be fine.
