Hi,
My girlfriend and I are hoping to drive from Washington DC to New Orleans over about a month long period. The problem we are encountering is hiring a car for this long without incurring a penalty charge. Has anybody done a similar one way trip and who did you rent your car off ?

There is always a premium to be paid for one-way rentals -- no matter what they call it. Advantage, for example, had a program last year where they did not charge a "drop off fee." However, the rate was $60 per day plus. Shop the major US companies -- Hertz, Alamo, Budget, AVIS, Enterprise, etc, and see what each will charge for the time you want. The company that is cheapest one day may be higher the next -- so don't assume that the cheapest company last time is still the least expensive today.
I've not heard of penalty charges for long time periods --but if they do, I'd rent from one company for half the trip, and rent from another for the remainder -- just choose a city in the middle and plan to leave one and pick up the other! (I think, though, the penalty you mention is probably the one-way drop fee.) Bob
