Moving to San Diego from NJ in Sept. 2003

A friend and I have decided to move out of NJ and to San Diego in Sept. 2003 and want to take the Southern route. Want to see as much as we can cause we are not in a rush such as Little Rock, New Orleans, San Antonio, Phoenix, and anything else you could suggest. The only problem is that I will be traveling with my dog and am looking for advice on traveling with him and still getting to see everything. Any info and tips would be greatly appreciated!

What kind of vehicle will you be using and what kind/size/age of dog is he?

I'll be driving an SUV. My dog just turned 2 and is a 90 pound Yellow Labrador Retriever.
