I am looking to take a road trip with a buddy who just broke up with his girlfriend and needs to get away. Problem is we both work and can't afford to take a vacation day right now. So we live in St. Louis and are looking for a getaway in either missouri or illinois. I know route 66 is a popular destination, but i need insider ideas from those of you who have either traveling in this area or are from the area. Thanks for your help.

A roadtrip suggestion is pending --but maybe your friend would be up for fine meal in nearby St. Charles. "Friar Tuck" serves some mighty fine margaritas upstairs in the wine cellar at Vivian's in St. Charles. (http://www.roadtripamerica.com/eats/vivians.htm)
Carlock, IL is one of the odd out-of-the way places that could make for an interesting road trip.
Springfield, MO is home to Bass Pro's Outdoor World and a visit to the home of the largest wide-mouth Bass in captivity might be the ticket to get your friend out of his funk.
At the risk of sounding redundant given some of my recent postings, I highly recommend Nashville as a party town. If you can put up with all the 'pop-country' crap, you will find yourself in a land of beautiful and friendly women who most definitely know how to party. Check out the Wildhorse Saloon. Fond memories of flirting with some Vanderbilt University girls while trying not to laugh at the line dancers. It's only 300 miles away, and it seems like your friend could use a good drive.
Weather is fairly predictable west of the Appalachians this time of year. Get a weekend forecast from a reliable source and you should be able to pick a good time to go.

Having traversed the length and breadth of this country some 47 times I think one of the highest concentrations of beautiful women can be found in Van Buren and Cleburne counties in north central Arkansas. Must be something in the water?

I lived in Minneapolis for three years. Relocated (via a six-month stay back on Long Island-where I'm from originally) to L.A. three months ago. I posted a message or two just before my drive out here (about places to stop in Nebraska, etc.)
