Help!
My friend and I are two college girls going on a road trip from Detroit to NYC with a stop in Boston. We plan on leaving Dec 27th and returning by Jan 4th. I have a few questions:
1) how much should we plan/make reservations
2) what should we do about new years in nyc as far as hotel?
3) how much money should it take?
Any advice is appreciated
Ordinarily I wouldn't suggest this, but your best bet for reasonably priced lodging for New Years is going to be on Long Island. The Long Island Railroad runs free trains all night long. I suggest that you book a room somewhere in Queens or Nassau County. Every train station has onsite or nearby 24 hour taxi companies to get you back to your room.
As far as general advice, book all of your rooms ahead of time if you can. It's just one less thing to worry about, and you can usually get good discounts by booking online.
Other than that, just watch out for lake effect snow near Buffalo.
Out of curiosity, are you planning to go through Canada or Cleveland?

I have to respectfully disagree with the previous advice. New Year's Eve in NYC (Times Square, Rockefeller Center ice rink, Radio City Music Hall, etc, etc, etc) is a magical time. I would not spend the time and energy traipsing back and forth from Long Island. If you can possibly afford it, suck it up and get a hotel in the city. I doubt if you'll regret it when your old and gray.
I value Don's advice greatly, but I think he's off on this one. I lived on the Island for most of my first 25 years and spent numerous New Years in the city.
The trains are easy to deal with and you'll save well over a hundred dollars on your room per night. They're free on New Years Eve and not expensive generally. It is just as difficult to travel around the city on New Years as it is to go back to Long Island when the party is over.
