2 Separate Road Trips

Hello all,

I'm looking for suggestions for 2 different road trips in July.

A friend of mine is moving from Atlanta, GA to Vancouver, WA. He has a dog so we'll need pet friendly hotels on the way to WA. We're leaving from Birmingham, AL on the way to Vancouver.

What are some "must see" places on the route from Birmingham to Vancouver? I don't really care about the southern states since we've been there done that, but I'm fascinated with the western USA - Missouri and beyond, especially Wyoming, etc. We'll be traveling for about 5 or 6 days.

ALSO, I have to be in Milwaukee, WI the following week for work. I'm thinking of making a solo road trip from Vancouver to Milwaukee.

Is a female, traveling alone for 5-6 days advisable? I plan on renting an SUV for the drive.

What are must see places along the northern route from Vancouver to Milwaukee, especially for a person traveling alone? Again, I'm fascinated by Idaho, Montana, North Dakota.

A common theme you will notice here as you read other threads is that there are no generic 'must see's' as that depends on your interests and what appeals to you the most from them, of which you have told us nothing about. Another is the distance you can cover each day on a multi day trip while keeping it comfortable, reasonably relaxed and most importantly safe. Your trip is going to take at least 4 overnight stops and the best part of 5 days travelling for 9-10 hours a day so it's important you treat it as a marathon and not a sprint, dividing your days up evenly into 500-550 mile segments which will give you time for basic stops with regular breaks to refresh. The best thing you can do right now is do a little research and study a good map and see what appeals to you and how that can be fitted into your timeframe, once you have a couple of places in mind we can help piece it together, but right now there are thousands of options.

It's fine to travel solo as a single female [or male] and many do. Just use the same instincts you do in your day to day life and if something doesn't feel quite right it usually isn't, so move on. An SUV is fine as a rental but not necessary if you would prefer to keep costs down. A mid-size salon offers space and comfort for a lot less when you consider the extra fuel consumption.

Even 5 or 6 months is fine. I have been doing that on a regular basis since the turn of the century. Statistics show that there are more solo females on the road, than males.

As Dave said, follow your natural instincts, and when booking accommodation ask to see the room before committing. Besides the usual, check if the smoke alarm is working ( a long umbrella comes in handy) and if the door has a lock which cannot be opened from the outside - such as the chain or bolt lock.
