Summer Roadtrip From Military Training to Home

I'm going to be driving from Panama City Beach Florida to the Finger Lakes in New York. On the way I was thinking of visiting the following locations.

New Orleans, Louisianna
Edwards, Mississippi
Memphis, Tennessee
Nashville, Tennessee
Charlotte, North Carolina
Virginia Beach, Virginia
Washington, DC
and finally the Finger Lakes.

I think my largest question is, I need a jumper from Nashville to Virginia Beach. I picked Charlotte just because its a large city, does anyone have any suggestions along the entire route for places or things to stop and see?
