Stop over recommendation in VA/NC on I77N

My husband and I will be driving north from the Orlando via I77N on New Year's Eve. Our goal is to make it into VA or very close to it and are hoping for some suggestions of towns/cities that are near the highway where people have had good experiences. We are not looking for a big new year's bash (we're anticipating being tired) and don't require 5-star accommodations. It is our plan to get to this stop over point by dinner time and be able to enjoy some local cuisine (not chain restaurants). Also, we'll be hitting the road fairly early the following day.

Heading north from Orlando, the farthest north we'd recommend traveling in a single day is Elkin, NC. That's 600 miles - roughly 10-12 hours on the road in real world conditions, and roughly the maximum distance a professional driver would be allowed to travel in a single day.

That's really a maximum, Statesville or even Charlotte would also be good stops at the end of a solid day on the road.

Any of those places should have several local restaurants to pick from, and a wide variety of hotel options. Without knowing your ultimate destination, that's about the best we can tell you.
