Does anyone have any advice on a scenic routes?

Well, since the Blue Ridge Parkway runs from Virginia to Asheville, I'd probably start there.
But without knowing any other details, including a specific starting point or how much time you have, it's going to be hard for anyone to provide any other specifics.
Besides Michael's valid comment, you can really do this yourself. Scenic routes are marked on all good maps. Get maps of the relevant States from AAA or get a road atlas such as Rand McNally, and you will note that all the scenic routes are marked with a dotted line.
This is not something computer mapping programs provide. Good maps are invaluable for planning a trip, and essential when you are on the road.

(right below Shennadoah Nat'l Park--a great & scenic place to visit in itself) you can pick up Skyline Drive south which leads into the Blue Ridge Parkway, both of which are among the most scenic routes in the USA. Not only are these beautiful and well-maintained roads by the NPS, commercial traffic is not allowed(no trucks). That being said, while this road follows a general sothwest direction it is intended to be enjoyed slowly. The speed limit most of the time is 45mph and often with the winding, scenic moutainous nature of the drive this speed cannot be maintaind for long. A quicker route to use while avoiding I-81 is to take US 11 south through the valley, through Staunton, Lexington, Roanoke, Salem & then pick-up he BR Parkway down near the NC state line. This will lead directly to Asheville and a beautiful drive.Quote:

Tagging onto what witch hunt was suggesting, above, you can pick up Skyline Drive (which goes through Shenandoah National Park) at Front Royal on the north end (I-66). It ends at Waynesboro on the south end (I-64). It is 105 miles from one end to the other. Stopping at scenic view pullouts and for a snack break, it took us 5 hours to traverse this. We only took one very, very short hike, about 1/8 mile down the Appalachian Trail, so if you hike more, you'll have to add time.
