The US-60/US-62 bridge over the Mississippi River between IL and MO has been closed for 1 year - until March 2016 - for major maintenance. This makes the "shortcut" between Paducah KY and Sikeston MO less convenient. The detour takes you right through downtown Cairo IL on US-51 to I-57 Exit 1 (IL).
..........We're headed back out West during the summer and I'd been pondering the shortcut and using your route off of I-24 below Paducah to approach Wycliffe from the south. Won't be doing that now.
I've been through downtown Cairo and I don't intend to pass through there a second time.

I wouldn't sweat Cairo - I went through in the middle of the day Tuesday and there was no traffic or anything that looked dangerous. All it does is add 10 minutes to the trip.
The "shortcut", by the way is take Exit 7 off I-24 and take US-62 and KY-286 west to Wickliffe.
The last and only time I passed through that fair city, my truck's A/C wasn't working and my buddy and I rolled up the windows for extra security. Glad to hear it's better now.
Maybe I'll still do the US 62-KY 286 to Wickliffe. I really want to take the wife over that "ski-jump" 2 lane bridge over the Ohio River. Had wanted to make it a two-fer with the Mississippi River bridge just a half mile away, but she'll probably be glad it's only one.

Well, I still wouldn't go through Cairo after dark, I wouldn't say it's gotten any better. At 11am there were hardly any people on the streets and very little traffic. It almost looked like a ghost town.
