Hi,
I've been on many road trips in my day and I'm set to take another from Chicago to Fort Worth this spring. I was wondering if anybody knew of any neat stops a long the way. I'm thinking of going through St. Louis and Joplin then down Route 69 to Fort Worth. I like the off-the-beaten-road types of things. Anything unique or worth seeing....

Probably the best place to start looking for unique attractions is RTA's Map Center. It's designed to do exactly what you are looking for - list places to visit right along a route. Every suggested stop comes personally recommended by a member of the Roadtrip America staff.
See if anything there strikes your interest, and if you still have some questions, be sure to ask!
A couple of off-the-beaten-path type sites that I've enjoyed on or near the route you plan to take would include a pair south of St. Louis: Mastodon State Historic Site outside Imperial, and the town of Ste. Genevieve, an old French town with a ferry across the Mississippi and a real old-fashioned ice cream parlor as well as some historic homes. MO-32/MO-8 would then get you back to I-44. If Joplin is a way point rather than a destination, you might also want to consider using US-65/US-412 to swing through Branson MO and see Americana kitsch at its finest. Then for a state park a bit above the ordinary, you can enjoy Lake Texoma just before entering Texas.

I take I55/I44/US69/US75 traveling between Chicago/DFW area. I can think of couple things but it's up to your personal taste.
- Meramec Caverns near Stanton MO
- Many Many Walmarts along the way (to view and enjoy people-of-walmart-dot-comz)
- Some picnic area and day activities near Eufaula Lake OK
- Casino near Durant OK
Watch out for MO troopers on I44.
