Me and my housemate are from London and are planning a road trip from San Fran- NY over 5 weeks. We are planning on using the 1st week to make the most of Cali and then 4 weeks to go down through New Orleans and up to NY. Will 4 weeks give us enough time to enjoy the trip and not spend our whole time driving?

You can drive from California to New York is roughly a week, if you are just focused on driving. 4 weeks will give you a nice amount of time to stop and explore things along the way. You'll still have to make choices, and won't have time to see everything, but that would still be true if you had 4 years!
As Michael said, you have a nice amount of time but choices need to be made depending on your interests. There are many great National and State parks, City's, historic sites and so on. I would recommend you get a good map of the USA and read around the RTA forums and road trip planning pages above to find ideas. Once you have some dots on the map we can help to join them up and make suggestions and answer any further questions you may have.
