Michigan to NY, NY in August - brewery hopping?

We'd like to do a road trip from Detroit to New York, NY in August. To last about 1 week. Might be cool to make a brewery theme out of it...any ideas? Maybe also incorporate some American history sites into the mix.

Fortunately, micro or 'boutique' breweries are fairly ubiquitous, so finding a few of those along your route should not prove too difficult. Unfortunately, the most direct route between Detroit and New York, I-80, does not pass any well-known historic sites. But since a one way drive is a bit more than you should really try to drive in a single day, you might as well make the drive(s) just a bit longer and get to some places that will satisfy your desire to "incorporate some American history sites." Two possible routes that do just that would be, instead of using I-80 across northern Pennsylvania, 1) try US-20 through central New York. This follows the old Erie Canal and passes Niagara Falls, Seneca Fall, Cooperstown, and West Point; or 2) Use US-40 (the old National Road) and US-30 (the old Lincoln Highway) acr4ossw southern Pennsylvania which would take you by Washington's Fort Necessity, the Ohio and Chesapeake Canal, Gettysburg, Amish country, and Trenton. Another possibility that while not terribly historic is quite scenic and laid back: US-6 across northern PA.

Thank you! yeah since we have a week to get to NY we can definitely take the a less direct route. It is just my husband and I who are on the trip. Also - we are taking the slow route to NY because we have a few days to spend in the city when we arrive for a "retreat" that my husband's company is putting on. The retreat will involve golf and a Mets game, and most likely some networking amongst colleagues. So we were looking for a fun (but still somewhat laid back) road trip leading up to that weekend.
