Driving a car out to LA around the end of August so we're looking to have fun along the way. Not in a hurry. Planned stops to visit friends and family and general sightseeing include: NYC, DC, Nashville, New Orleans, Dallas, Santa Fe, Grand Canyon / Scottsdale, potentially Vegas then on into LA. What are we missing in this itinerary? We are not in a hurry so we have some time to explore. Thanks for your advice.

The beauty of traveling across the US is that there are millions of things you could see and do, and we don't really believe in "must sees" here, because there are such a wide variety of option no matter which way you go.
Looking at your general outline, a few of the more major stops you might consider include Blue Ridge Parkway/Smokey Mountains between DC and Nashville, Nachez Trace or Memphis and the Great River Road between Nashville and NOLA, Carlsbad Caverns or Cadillac Ranch and parts of the former Route 66 between Dallas and Santa Fe. As you get into the 4 corners area there are a multitude of national parks to consider, like Mesa Verde, Zion, and arches/canyonlands, as well as Monument Valley.
That's by no means even close to a complete list, but a few of the most popular highlights along the general route you've laid out. RTA's map center can help you find hundreds of more potential stops that could be interesting to you.
You are vauge on how much time you have to take the trip.
August/September can mean 8/31 to 9/1, 2 days, 8/1 to 9/30, 61 days, or any where in between.
