Roadtrip in the us, need tips

We are four norwegians that are planning on going on a roadtrip in your great nation, yet we have not reached the conclution of
where, for how long, and how long are we staying in each city.

Based on the cost of the planetickets we pref. to start in new york.

So we are just looking for a suggestion of the best sites and towns to visit. We are not looking for great party and drunken-crazy places, as we get enough of that in europe. We just want to see great historical sites, beautifull nature, fun sites of interest or fantastic towns/cities.

Welcome to RTA!

We'd be here all day making recommendations of places to see and things to do in our 50 states. What we usually recommend is that you get a large paper map or atlas of the USA, and start marking things that interest you. Pretty soon, a route develops. We can help you with the little details.

You might want to get a good idea of your budget, too, as well as how long you think you can be here. Those will be important when planning your trip. This is a large country that takes 5-7 days to cross it without sightseeing along the way.

I think the 4 of you need to sit down and first work out how much time and money you can invest in this trip and work on your common interests, there are just too many possible options for us to make meaningful suggestions with so little to work with. Even starting out in NY you could visit anywhere in the country with the right amount of time available, you could drive coast to coast, and with 3 or 4 weeks, back again and make a complete loop of the country.

Have a good look around the RTA site, study a good map and work on the basics of your trip, once you have made a start we can offer meaningful advice, otherwise we might as well throw darts at a map in a dark room ! lol

We will do just that in the upcomming weekend :)

Concerning budget and time, well we thought about using about one month over there, and we pref. like to keep budget as low as possible, without losing anything, but we are norwegians so money will be a minor problem, time and sites is our main concern :)

And that can be both good and bad. On the good side, of course, is the fact that you will have the ability to cover a lot of ground. A leisurely trip to the scenic wonders of the great Southwest (such as the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley) is even possible and would allow you to pass through and visit the South, Texas, the Ozarks, the Great Plains, and the Appalachian Mountains on your RoadTrip.

On the bad side, four weeks is an awfully long time to be forced to be in anyone's company. No matter how friendly you are at the beginning, conflicts will inevitably arise. These will only be exacerbated by the fact that you will be spending much of your time confined to a small box, the car. I would therefore suggest that you plan to take every third or fourth day 'off' from your travels, and spend a day in a city or park that's large enough for you all to go off and have separate adventures and then gather in the evening and compare notes. You might even end up getting more out of your trip this way.

Of course, taking such time off means that you wouldn't be able to cover as much ground so a trip to the West might not be in order. Still there are plenty of scenic and historic sites in the eastern half of the country to keep you occupied, amused, and amazed. For starters I would suggest that you think about New England, the Appalachians, historic cities such as Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Civil War sites, and build your trip around such venues. That would give you the chance to see a few different aspects of America without wearing yourselves out.
