Road Tripping with a Dog???

Hello all! I'm new to RTA, but not to road tripping. I always prefer to drive if time permits, so much more fun! We're planning a road trip in September from Dallas to Salt Lake City. We're planning on spending about a week in SLC, taking different routes there and back, and seeing some sights along the way. Any advice here would be appreciated, I've never traveled this part of the country.

My question is we have a new dog, not a puppy though. And she is small. I really don't want to leave her for that length of time but have never done a road trip with a dog. She travels well locally, and we did take her to Shreveport to visit family (3 hr drive) and she did fine. Other than finding dog friendly hotels and bringing food and water, how should we prepare? What should we expect? What do we need to be on the look-out for? I'd love any and all advice because, like I said, we've never traveled with a dog.

One thing you will need to consider is that most national parks are not very pet friendly. Dog typically are not allowed on trails, or most areas other than in parking areas and campgrounds. Other public areas like National Forests, BLM lands, and state parks are very often a better choices for exploring with a dog.
