Driving from Boston to San Fran- sites to see along the way?

In September a friend and I will be driving from Boston to San Franciso and are looking for sites to see along the way. We will most likely be driving through the northern states, not wanting to drive too far south. We are open to any and all suggestions of places to stop and visit along the way. We're 24 year old, laid back college roommates so we're up for anything!

There will be literally thousands of possible sites and routes you could check out, too many in fact to make meaningful ones with the info you have given. Your best option is to do a little research and get a good map of the US and as you find places that interest you put a mark on the map. As your route unfolds we can certainly offer alternatives and suggestions, but not knowing how long you have for the trip, what your main interests are, or exactly what states you are travelling through etc means trying to offer help at the moment would be like throwing a dart in a dark room.
