Flooding and mud slides on the Alaska Highway in the Yukon Territories
The Alaska Highway is closed to all traffic.
The road was reopened to Haines Junction to allow folk to catch the ferry to Juneau, and the Marine Highway back south. The section between Teslin and Watson Lake is unavoidable no matter which route you take.
Just when I was about to leave. Can't help thinking about astraclub, hope he is not too inconvenienced with his family.

Thanks for those links Dave. Seems like it may be prudent to stay here another day. There's no accommodation, and maybe little in the way of provisions and fuel, should I be held up out there. Had planned leaving on Tuesday, but seems like it may now be Wednesday. Would be a nice birthday present if it then opens in time for me to get through. It will take two days to get to Whitehorse. Maybe longer with the holdups and construction. And I hear it is still raining.
On the other hand, I have been toying with the idea of going back down to Haines and taking the ferry back to the lower 48. After all, the Dempster and Yellowknife are now out of the question. But when I checked, it would be more than $1300 from Haines to Bellingham, and that is without food and a cabin. Just the fare for me and the car. A wee (huge wee) bit outside of my budget.
Here's another article which is interesting. Gives a great undertstanding of life in these remote areas... and how much we have become dependent on the motor vehicle.
