Memphis to Panama City Beach
Hi there, we are a group of four people driving from Memphis to panama city. We really would like to stop the night somewhere in Alabama along the way. Are there any suggestions on safe places to stay? We like good food and good nightlife. 80) so these are important also?
Many thanks
Justin
You'll Know It When You See It
It's hard to give specific advice as to what/where is 'safe' and what/where isn't, not only because neighborhoods can change character in relatively short order, but because crime can occur anywhere. Your best bet, as always and everywhere, is your own sense of the feel of your surroundings. If an area makes you feel uncomfortable, simply move on down the road. This is especially true when you are traveling and are not fixed to any specific location.
As to a good target for your overnight stay in Alabama, I would suggest a short detour from the direct route down US-78/I-65 to Montgomery. Just past Winfield AL take AL-13 south to US-43 and Tuscaloosa. It's hard to beat a college town for night life, even in the summer. Plus, this is roughly half-way to Panama City. The next morning resume your journey by taking US-82 to Montgomery and US-231 south.
