Southern CT to OBX and back... Suggestions for good pit-stop attractions?

Hi All. I am leaving on June 1 with my boyfriend for our second annual road trip to the Outer Banks. Last year we had hoped to just go on the fly and find cool places on our way down and back but were unsuccessful doing so. I thought this year it would be better to have a little more of a plan in mind... We travel through the east coast corridor from CT to MD, and then venture out to back road highways mid- MD, VA for a while until the big bridge tunnel and finally arrival with in a couple hours from the bridge to Kill Devil Hills, NC.

We love history, Native American site's, fun/ funky/ unusual stops... all that good stuff. I hoped some people might have a few suggestions of places along the way that might be close to our rout and a good, fun "break" from all the driving?

In an area that rich in things to see and do, I'm a bit surprised that you couldn't find anything - even on the fly. But here's a short list of just some of the possibilities: Edison's Labs, Monmouth Battlefield, Independence Mall, the Sultana and its port, Chestertown, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, Assateague and Chincoteague Islands, a NASA launch facility, and the first English attempt to settle the New World,.

Thank you so much! - We did find a few cool places to stop but really felt "untrustworthy" i guess of stopping in certain places for fear of wasting travel time on a place that may not have been worth the stop... These possibilities are great!! Can't wait to get on our trip now... :)
